Japanese Maple

We have just planted a Japanese Maple (7 gal - about 6 feet) in our front
lawn. When the tree gets established a bit, we're planning in putting a 5
foot (diameter, of course) rock wall - about 8 inches high around it.

My question is whether it will damage the tree if 8 inches of soil is
mounded around it's base. I have read that planting a tree too deep could
potentially stave it of oxygen.

I'm a newbie at tree planting, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes. Don't pile anything against a tree. If you pile soil or mulch
against it you invite a lot of problems including root rot, insect
infestations, disease and changes in pH.

I always leave my trees alone and plant nothing under them. The area
will be shaded anyway, so that would limit what you could put there.

Best to put the rock wall away from the tree, somewhere in the sun.

Hi
I just cut the grass away from my apple tree as siad on another site. I
cut a 3 ft circle put down landscape cloth ,put down some moss, wood chips
and tree bark mulch.
Do you think this will cause the same damage you speak about below. I onny
came up to the onion ball on the tree

You should do nothing to the base of a tree. The mulch, moss and fabric
could saturate it and make it susceptible to disease and rot.

FYI, a Japanese Maple likes a sheltered area. Not sure how you're
situating it, but a corner or your yard or side of a structure may be
a better option. I learned the hard way. I was told how to plant it,
but didn't listen. Nearly killed ours the first year by placing it in
the middle of my backyard. The following year, we moved it to a corner
and its thriving (now over 7 feet high, 4 feet wide and very full).
